“What Shall We Do Now”

What shall we use to fill the empty spaces
Where waves of hunger roar?
Shall we set out across the sea of faces
In search of more and more applause?
Shall we buy a new guitar?
Shall we drive a more powerful car?
Shall we work straight through the night?
Shall we get into fights?
Leave the lights on?
Drop bombs?
Do tours of the east?
contract diseases?
Bury bones?
Break up homes?
Send flowers by phone?
Take to drink?
Go to shrinks?
Give up meat?
Rarely sleep?
Keep people as pets?
Train dogs?
Race rats?
Fill the attic with cash?
Bury treasure?
Store up leisure?
But never relax at all
With our backs to the wall.

    this is such …
this is such powerfully strong material that it is far beyond its time, in both musical and visual terms. and dramatic delivery. this stuff is 30 yrs old and is 100 % still accurate. money, power, absolute power. corrupting absolutely. all of it. the wall, not only isolating… but full of wealthy, unattainable goodies as seen here… the best of music… period.

  6. PinkFloydManiac1973 Says:

    Actually, as my …
Actually, as my understanding goes, they finished the song but didn’t put it on the LP because they were afraid it would make the album too long! They also cut out other songs, some which would go on “The Final Cut”, and others that have still not been released. They need to compile all these extra songs they’ve had throughout their career and put the CD on the market.

    The artist probably …
The artist probably understood the overall theme of the film and would have listened to the music, wrote down his ideas, had them thrown back etc.

  13. maniacs11111 Says:

    I thought it …
I thought it represented young love. Starts of magical and wonderful and ends with bitter fueding. Eventually though the female uses her sexual charms to destroy the male! Quite true I think!

  14. PinkFloydManiac1973 Says:

    It’s a pity they …

  23. smegburgers Says:

    no actually it was …
no actually it was written for the Wall in ‘79 but there wasn’t enough space on the album, so they used Empty Spaces instead and put What Shall We Do Now in the movie and all their tours for The Wall in 80-81

  24. LyricLover420 Says:

    Butters-Waters …
Butters-Waters wrote The Wall his whole life as it’s semi-autobiographical, but it was recorded in ‘79 the movie not until ‘82( I’m pretty sure about the dates) and Waters wanted to address the materialistic attitude of the 80’s that were current when the movie was done, but not as much when The Wall was written, plus it wasn’t The Wall’s point. So it wasn’t on the album cuz it didn’t exist yet…he did it specifically for the movie.

  25. Oiaku Says:

    Sadly, there wasn’t …
Sadly, there wasn’t enough space on the LP.
