Hi, battery ...
Hi, battery technology develops in incremental shifts - where as we need monumental leaps.

I'm less optimistic of a technological fix for our current happy motoring paradign. The Big 3 in the USA are finished - they are just having the last waltz now.

EV vehicles will never scale up to our current ICE fleet has done. We just can't scrap 800 million ICE vehicles.

Watch the effect that 'credit crunch' is having on new car sales - this will roll into EV vehicle development. It's bleak.

I see your point, ...
I see your point, perhaps battery development or substitution could solve the Lithium shortage issue and other power sources might become available too in future. What do you mean by "EV will be part of a solution - but doesn't mean we will be able to drive like we currently do? Thanks

Small problem - ...
Small problem - massive use of fossil fuels used to make electric cars, in fact any car.

There simply is not enough lithium used in teh batteries to allow for all the existing 800 million odd cars in teh world to be converted over to EV vehicles.

IC engines lose 42% ...
IC engines lose 42% of their energy to exhaust and 28% of their energy to the cooling system.

So only aprox 30% of the money we spend on fuel for our cars is actually used to move them? That is crazy!

Electric powered vehicles could very well be the future as they are so efficient and in some cases so quick, or maybe some other new technology. Time will tell.

davidanth7:
whats ...
davidanth7:
whats to stop you from attaching a couple of alternators to a couple of moving parts ( ah to keep batt charged constantly )and increase distance.

Alternators cause drag - next time your engine is running, switch on your headlights and listen to the alternator drag down the engine speed.

You might get some energy back by fitting alternators, but it's more likely that you would actually shorten your range due to mechanical losses.

Regenerative braking is the better option.

The New Zealand ...
The New Zealand dollar (currency code NZD) is the currency of New Zealand. I think it's about $1.40 NZD for every $1 CAD but don't quote me.
